What type of interpreting is suitable for my event?

Organizing an event always comes with difficulties, from choosing the place to knowing how many and which guests will attend. In some cases, attendants speak a language different from the presenter’s, which is a problem for the planning of the event. In those cases, you should run to interpreting services, so several aspects should be considered before hiring this service.

When hiring any service, a thorough research is made regarding pricing, place, date, among other aspects. If you need an interpreting service, you should consider the type of event you are organizing in order to know what type of interpreting you will need for having a successful quality event.

In this article, I’ll show you a brief description of each interpreting type and their characteristics for you to decide which one is the best for your event.

Simultaneous Interpreting

It is the most known type of interpreting, and probably the fastest, since the simultaneous translator or interpreter translates the speech in the target language as the presenter speaks.

This type of interpreting normally needs the installation of equipment prior the event, which includes a booth, portable booth, and sound system. Additionally, theres is a possibility to use portable equipment in case there are few attendants. Read this article to know the necessary equipment for simultaneous interpretation in conferences.

It is perfect for conferences, talks, seminars, presentations, and any other events in which there is a person standing in front of a public. This type of interpreting has many advantages. One of them is understanding what the speaker says in real time, without affecting the duration of the event or the sound quality. There are many advantages of simultaneous interpreting in the business world, check them out by clicking the link.

Consecutive Interpreting

In this type of interpreting, the interpreter or translator takes notes of the speech to translate it later on. This activity requires a lot of concentration and an excellent ability to remember information.

There is no need for additional equipment in consecutive interpreting. For that reason, it is the most mobile and flexible type. However, the duration of the event tends to be longer, since the interpreter must wait for the speaker to finish speaking before interpreting.

This service is recommended for press conferences, short speeches, and short-duration ceremonies.

Liaison Interpreting

It is the one performed to establish communication between two people that speak different languages. It is frequently mistaken for consecutive interpreting, but there are some differences between them.

It is not necessary to have equipment, since the interpreter is just an intermediary who helps establishing or improving communication. It is different from consecutive interpreting because the later doesn’t need note-taking and is bidirectional.

This service is perfect for business meetings, politics reunions, guided tours to companies and facories, or informal events with few attendants.

Whisper Interpreting

This type of interpreting is similar to simultaneous interpreting. Here, the interpreter whispers in real time what was said by the speaker. Some of its advantages are: it is performed in real time, technical staff is not needed, and there is only one interpreter offering the service.

This type of interpreting is good for situations or conferences with a minimum amount of participants or only one person.
